Why Strength Imbalances Develop
Almost everyone has a stronger side. Years of favoring your dominant hand, compensating for old injuries, or simply doing bilateral exercises (like squats and deadlifts) that let the strong side take over - these all create asymmetry over time.
A small imbalance is normal. But when the difference between your left and right side exceeds 10-15%, you're entering injury territory. The weaker side compensates with poor mechanics, leading to overuse injuries, joint pain, and performance plateaus.
What Normal Asymmetry Looks Like
Sports science research defines these thresholds:
- Less than 5% - Excellent bilateral symmetry
- 5-10% - Normal range, monitor over time
- 10-15% - Actionable imbalance, start corrective work
- Over 15% - Significant asymmetry, possible injury risk

How to Test for Imbalances
